Team Fishel’s 2nd Annual Summer Safety Challenge kicks off in June. The timing couldn’t be better! Summer is our busiest and potentially most dangerous work season. The longer work days and hotter weather create additional stress for Teammates and also increase the risk of accidents. The Safety Challenge contest helps everyone focus on daily safety awareness while adding a bit of friendly competition to the work day.
Scoring for the Safety Challenge will work the same as last year. Throughout the contest, each Area is evaluated and awarded points based on key performance indicators: injuries, job damages, vehicle accidents and DOT score. Points are also awarded for High Impact Training and Job Site Inspections.
Divisions 11 and 30 ultimately emerged as the overall winners for 2016. But with Teammates throughout the country putting in the extra effort to work safely, the truth is that we all won big. Very big! As we head for our busiest season once again, let’s focus on staying Accident Free and make the 2017 Summer Safety Challenge even more successful!
The Team Fishel Wellness Program enters its ninth year in 2017 and we will once again be hosting onsite Wellness clinics this coming June.
As in past years, Team Fishel has partnered with HealthCheck360° to offer clinics which combine an onsite screening and a short health assessment questionnaire. The results give Teammates an objective view of their individual health risks and the opportunity to improve their health. Each participating Teammate receives an individual report from HealthCheck360° which provides a basic understanding of his or her health, expressed as a numerical score which can be compared from year to year. The indivual report is prepared exclusively for the Teammate and the content is not shared with Team Fishel.
After receiving their individual report, Teammates have the opportunity to speak with a health coach to identify risk factors and develop a plan to improve and optimize their health. Ongoing health coaching is available throughout the year as well.
Last year, 1,433 Teammates and spouses participated in the on-site screening clinics and a Health Risk Assessment. It was the largest number of annual participants in the program’s 8-year history and, based on the aggregate data provided by HealthCheck360°, Team Fishel’s overall average score continued trending upward!
While we can certainly celebrate the success of our Team Fishel Wellness Program for 2016, let’s also stay focused on the program’s goal: to create an environment in and around Team Fishel where accountability for health and wellness is shared by Team Fishel, its Teammates and their families. To keep each of us headed in the right direction, we encourage all Teammates to take advantage of the resources provided by HealthCheck360°. On-site wellness clinics begin in June. Mark it on your calendar today!
Team Fishel has been named Overall Winner of the 2016 William H. Feather Safety Award by the National Utility Contractors Association. The prestigious award was presented March 6th at the 2017 NUCA Convention in Las Vegas. The NUCA Safety Awards program recognizes member companies that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to safety within their organizations. Judges consider each company’s OSHA recordable injuries as well as Company Safety Statements and safety programs. The awards are given for several categories based on hours worked, as well as to an overall winner. Team Fishel previously won the NUCA safety award in 2015 for the largest category of 1 million or more worked hours.
Safety Manager Warren Graves believes the things we do internally are what separates Team Fishel from other utility contractors. “Our leadership has always been committed to our values,” Graves says. “We made ACCIDENT FREE our #1 Core Value and we live by that value from the top down.”
By leading with the value to be ACCIDENT FREE, Team Fishel has experienced a steady reduction in Teammate injuries. As a result, our OSHA recordable injury rate has decreased each year over the last three years and is now well below the industry average.
Team Fishel also pays very close attention to instructing new Teammates, the group most susceptible to accidents and injuries. The focus on safety begins the very first day on the job.
“Our goal is to onboard new Teammates in a manner that makes them feel part of the team from day one,” says Craig Mathes, Vice President of Safety and Human Resources. “And a big part of that process is making them understand Team Fishel’s unwavering commitment to Safety.”
To achieve that goal, each new Teammate receives a Welcome Package that includes an employee handbook and the primary items of Personal Protective Equipment – new hardhat, safety vest, safety glasses and work gloves. New hires also participate in Team Fishel’s Roadmap to Fishelization, a series of seven 1-hour orientation sessions covering Fishelosophy, Benefits & Wellness, Policies & Procedures, Profit Sharing, Teammate Development & Training, Operational Excellence & Planning, and Accident Free. Once in the field, new Teammates participate in Team Fishel’s Mentoring Program in which experienced Teammates monitor and coach the newest members of their crew.
Winning the NUCA Safety Award instills a sense of pride among Teammates and increases the confidence Customers have in Team Fishel. And while being the Overall Winner definitely celebrates work well done, it is also a huge incentive for even greater achievements in the future.
“One characteristic of great companies is that they don’t recognize the status quo,” Graves said. “That’s our belief at Team Fishel. No matter how good we are, we always want to be better!”
There were plenty of spectacular moments at the Arnold Sports Festival 2017, held March 2-5 in Columbus, OH. But the finest of those moments occurred when contestants gathered to compete in the Festival’s first powerlifting competition for people with disabilities. Columbus PSG Teammate James Spurgin was among them.
Spurgin, a Teammate at our Professional Services Group in Columbus, bench pressed a mighty 176 lbs. – using one arm! A few minutes later, he literally stepped in to assist a fellow contestant whose feet had begun losing traction during a lift. Spurgin anchored the contestant’s feet with his own, providing the stability needed to successfully complete the lift. Other competitors achieved equally impressive lifts, but Spurgin believes it’s the “doing” that’s most important.
“The competition isn’t the point,” Spurgin noted in a Columbus Dispatch story about the event. “It’s the fact that we can still do these things.”
Indeed, the former U.S. Marine struggled to adapt after losing the use of his right arm in a 2006 motorcycle accident. Years later, powerlifting became a source of inspiration and motivation, renewing his self-worth and confirming that he could achieve his goals in life.
Spurgin never planned on becoming a role model. But his participation in strength competitions brought more visibility and people have been inspired by his success. Today he has become more open to using his story to help other people.
“My goal isn’t to become a professional athlete,” he said. “It’s to spread the idea that you can still be strong and still be worth something, even if you’re hurt.”
James Spurgin’s powerful story can also enrich our understanding of the Core Values that we share at Team Fishel. Think of it when you hear about Being the Solution – embracing challenges, finding innovative ways to perform our work, and overcoming obstacles. Remember it the next time you think about our Commitment to High Performance. And if James’s experience inspires you to achieve something very special in your own life, go for it!
Teammates across the country stepped up once again with generous contributions and pledges to support the annual United Way campaign. Between Team Fishel's area offices, its subsidiary Team Power Group and corporate donations, the grand total pledged for 2017 is $481,294! That’s a home run for sure!
Four areas - Atlanta, Groveland, Houston and Plant City – topped the charts with 100% participation. Seven more areas achieved 90% or above in total participation: Corporate, Dallas, Las Vegas, Manassas, Richmond, Cincinnati Technologies and Columbus Technologies. That’s the kind of generosity that really makes an impact on communities throughout the country.
Special congratulations to our Plant City, FL operation! The Plant City office once again ranked #81 on the United Way Suncoast’s list of the Top 100 Most Generous Workplaces. Way to go, Teammates!
As always, this is the perfect time to say Thank You to our Teammates throughout the nation for their excellent support of the United Way each year. Just before the holiday season kicked in last November, six High Performance Teammates participated in the Arizona Top Operator Competition in Phoenix. Representing Team Fishel were Ryan Haley, Enrique Garcia, Nicholas Marshall, Osvaldo Lincon-Munoz, Melchor Betances, and Brian South. Hosted by construction equipment dealer Flaska JCB, the event tested contestants’ heavy equipment operating skills to the limit! The challenges ranged from picking up a golf ball and dropping it in a designated area to picking up a T-bar from one cone then dropping it to another – all while operating a mini excavator, a large excavator or a backhoe!
Team Fishel ranked in the top 10 for all the events and three of our Teammates made it to the winner’s circle! Ryan Haley placed first in the backhoe competition, Melchor Betances placed second in the mini excavator event, and Brian South placed third in the backhoe event.
With great music and tasty food to accompany the exciting challenges, the Arizona Top Operator Competition was enjoyed by all. For our Teammates, the event also provided an opportunity to demonstrate what Team Fishel is all about – excellent operational skills, working together, mentoring our Teammates, and watching out for the other guy.
“I loved to see the Teammates represent what Fishel stands for by sharing their advice and techniques to help each other improve in the events, even though it was an individual competition,” said Ryan Haley. Way to go, Teammates! That’s High Performance all around!
